The Mediation Center

The Mediation Center

The Mediation Center is a program to assist staff in helping students get back on track when they are not responding to intervention in the classroom.

There are two persons staffing the Mediation Center at all times.

Mediation is also used when a situation warrants privacy and removal from an "audience".

Being directed to The Mediation Center does not always mean a student is "in trouble" or has violated a school rule. Rather, it often simply means we want to address needs and/ or concerns in a private and safe space.

Students may be referred to the Mediation Center by staff if they are not responding to primary interventions such as verbal correction, redirecting, loss of points, etc. If the student is not responding to these interventions the staff can direct then to go to Mediation. When this happens, the staff needs to call Mediation and give a brief explanation.

There may be instances where the behavior is such that it warrants immediate referral to Mediation. These should be limited to instances that compromise safety.

Once in Mediation, the Mediation staff will work with the student to redress their behavior and/or de-escalate them with goal of reintegrating them back in the classroom. It may be that the behavior was such that they will not be returned to the classroom. This decision will be made by the Mediation staff in coordination with the principal.

It may be that closure is warranted before a student returns. A teacher can make this determination or this can be recommended by Mediation staff. If closure is warranted, someone from Mediation will be sent to cover the class while closure takes place in the Mediation Center.

Once the student is returned to class it is upon the teacher to welcome the student back to class
